Kevin Danki’s left-footed goal in the 80th minute and Nick Hagerlund’s header in the 90th minute completely turned the tide, as Cincinnati Football Club secured a 2-0 home victory over Atlanta United in their season opener on Saturday.

After nearly 80 minutes without a goal, Cincinnati’s attack came out at full speed, with goals from Denki, one of last year’s two top scorers, and local product and fan favorite Haglund.

Despite All-Star forward Evand leaving the field injured in the 11th minute, Cincinnati Football Club still managed to secure all three points against an Eastern rival who has been a thorn in their side for the past seven years.

Evand pressed his right knee as he fell, without making contact, but managed to move on his own. He was substituted in the 13th minute.

Cincinnati FC (1-0-0, 3 points) controlled possession in the second half, finishing with 55.3% possession. They also had 9 shots, 3 on target, resulting in 2 goals.

Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Serentano thwarted several chances for Atlanta in the first half (0-1-0, 0 points), making 3 saves and keeping 1 clean sheet.

This was a very intense match, with both teams vying for corner kicks and free kicks.

The two teams combined for a total of 3 yellow cards and 28 fouls, including 12 offsides.

Fives goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos received support from the Atalanta defense for much of the second half, but then the dam broke. Hoyos made no saves in either of the two goals they allowed.

Atalanta also had 9 shots and 3 crosses, but only managed 2 corners and 3 crosses throughout the match. They also had 7 offsides and 18 fouls called.
